That hyper-detailed look is the result of watching movies on a small screen. A large, projected image eliminates that effect and gives a cinematic quality to the picture.
I've NEVER seen a movie which did not look significantly better in HD.
You also need to respect the director/cinematographer. If the colours are vibrant, that's because they are supposed to be vibrant. If you can see pimples, that is because the makeup person did a bad job (or the director should have cast a non-pimply actor!). Or maybe the director wanted you to see those flaws. In real life some people are pimply and sweaty...
