I can't say I was shocked. The N word was commonly used in British Commonwealth countries at that time, without racist overtones.
Only five years ago here in Australia we contemplated building a sports ground and calling it the 'Ni**er Brown Stadium' after a well-known sporting personality by the name of (you guessed it) Ni**er Brown. I think the PC brigade got their way and it was called something else.
