Film joke in HBO's "Sopranos"

This joke had me grinning with delight, not only for the joke itself but for the situation in which it was told.
The day's entertainment at Mama Soprano's nursing home is a comedian who tells a joke that the average person wouldn't "get" let alone the clientele of a nursing home:
"Did you hear about the Polish version of "Roshomon"? Everyone's version of the rape and murder is the same."
No one laughed. Except me. And maybe you.
