Your comments make it even more frightening now that you affirm its reality. It is indeed unsettling to think people still live and behave as if the old regime was still in power. It seems life is a daily struggle against your neighbor and anyone in a uniform and there are no guarantees the sun will rise.
Now, the driver did get off course and ended up having his own Deliverance" experience. The village scene was just creepy. (Of course, in Texas you get chainsawed into barbecue. Here you are forced to pick cotton.) I'm just glad some film makers are not afraid to show what it can be like. They aren't selling many country retirement dachas with this brutal honesty but that's not their intention.
