From France, the lacerating WWI war film, "Wooden Crosses." No, you needn't use FX to realistically portray a

battle: this film does so using REAL explosives and the effect is shocking.
A French regiment on furlough from the front is joined by a young recruit, recently a civilian in law school.
There isn't much of a plot, no heroics in the classic sense, and the enemy is faceless and almost non-existent, yet this film's relentless and senseless violence, perhaps because it isn't keyed to creating an immediate emotional reaction, feels more realistic and horrific than any other.
Highly recommended.
