"Texas Killing Fields": Too Dark for Texas . . .

This film is very loosely based on the events that took place over a period of years between Houston and Galveston. Multiple women disappeared and their bodies found in the bayous mostly around Texas City. The script was written with one specific set of suspects in mind even though there were actually several killers involved over the years. Danny Boyle was signed initially but changed his mind because the thought the film "too dark" to be made. Instead, Ami Mann (Micheal's daughter) got the job with dad producing it. It was entered into the Venice competition but did not fare well. Probably the reason I never saw or heard of it in local theaters.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan is a transplanted New Yorker who partners with Sam Worthington. Morgan has been tracking the large number of disappearances and murders that mostly fall outside their jurisdiction. Jessica Chastain is a Texas City detective and Worthington's frictional ex. The action begins with a homicide investigation and the body counts keep rolling in. Worthington stays riled up because Morgan persists in crossing the lines to investigate because he is driven to catch the perps.

Chloe Moretz is part of a parallel plot as the abused child of a woman of questionable character who houses four men of really bad character. After the mid-point Moretz becomes caught up in the ongoing crime wave and the perps begin to directly taunt Morgan and Worthington via phone.

Danny Boyle probably made the right decision. This was a dark, gritty film with little to no redemption. Morgan and Chastain were very good as were the villains but Worthington, to me, seems to be pretty much a liability to most every film. The plot does toss a red herring but it is so small it should be thrown back.

I can't imagine ordering the NF disk (with prior knowledge) perhaps I should have waited for streaming. IMdB viewers gave it a 5.5 and I applaud the generous deed.
