This Norwegian gem shows us the true events that occurred on the island referred to as Bastoy by staff and inmates there. Bastoy was a hard line reform school where children and teens were sent to learn the lessons of life in the form of obedience and fitting in.
The stark cinematography and near monochromatic look gives you the feel of the desolation, cold, and harshness those of Bastoy endured. The governor, played by the superb Stellan Skarsgard, maintained a tight grip on his staff and the boys he lorded over by projecting power by discipline and punishment with glints of paternal understanding.
When Erling arrived (C-19) he was rumored to have murdered and assigned to the C Dorm along with Ivar (C-5)who came on the same boat. Olav (C-1) was the inmate in charge and due to be released after six years of the cruel drudge of Bastoy. The narrative shows us the impact Erling has on C Dorm and Olav who efforts to civilize Erling by example were fruitless.
Ivar, weak of body and mind, was soon preyed upon by the Dorm Father, Brathen. Soon Olav witnessed what was being done to Ivar and his attempt to inform on Brathen ended in being unexpectedly berated by the Governor. This led to series of events and resentments then eventually led to a riot and overthrow of the school and Governor who fled to the mainland only to return with a Norwegian warship and armed escort.
This is really a strong narrative film and it grips you for the full two hours. It is a NF Streamer and I give it 4 outta 5.
