I have spent a little bit of time amongst some of the local folks in that area. I think one of the things that comes to light is that one person's squalor is another person's paradise. I don't think the people there in the movie or in real life are any less or any more happy than other peoples from all over the world including our own communities.
That is part of the artistry of this movie. It doesn't dress up the reality of the world it depicts to make it more palatable. It skillfully reveals it's true beauty and wonder sans tricks or misrepresentations
