I watched Siskel and Ebert from the days of PBS. It was just a short weekly show that kept me up to date on new movies. They were criticized for dumbing down movie criticism and the up-down thumbs being too simplistic. But it worked for me- a quick review, get some idea whether it was of interest to me. So I watched the man weekly for years. It was quite bad to see Siskel slurring his words and then brain cancer took him. Then Ebert had his serious cancer, lost his voice and his ability to eat, but still kept doing movie reviews and keeping a good attitude, in public at least. Just last night, the news was the cancer had returned- it is progressive, but one never knows how many months or years there are. Just one day, as it turned out. I'll miss his presence on the TV and in print.
