RE: "But what was the Black Goo?" It symbolizes technology and empiricism

I realize the first scene could be interpreted at least two ways but in the context of the entire movie the most plausible way is that the "sacrificial engineer" was a Christ figure on Earth at some point in time after the Dawn of Man. His death was not punishment but was a personal sacrifice so that others might live. He swallowed the black goo from the sacrificial bowl and allowed his genetic material to mix with the water that would eventually be consumed my anyone who drank the water. The black go kick started evolution, creating man in the image of the Engineers.

The Engineers, especially the sacrifical Engineer at the beginning, present Prometheus because they gave "fire" to man, fire being the advanced DNA code of the Engineers.

The black goo created mutants when it accidentally became mixed with other substances, such as what happened when the crew of Prometheus stumbled on the huge building filled with cannisters of the black goo.

What the last Engineer apparently wanted to do was carry out his original mission of kick- starting the human race that at that too-coincidental time 2000 years ago had become mired in a different kind human sacrifice (gladiators), religious persecution, war, etc. He was not headed to Earth to destroy it, but to save it.
