You're right--it is tough to translate comics to film--but a good director will be able to figure out a way. IMO, Nolan has had the most success so far with the dark knight trilogy. It doesn't try to be a comic book, but more of a morality tale. I also liked Sam Rami's interpretation of Spidey and Snyder's 300, which tried to be a much closer interpretation.
Ultimately, translating a comic book for film has the same challenges as a book. It's about minimizing or eliminating the problems and distilling the characters and plot into a script that works.
