No better way to start a film than with a deliciously played act of cunnilingus. Bravo Ridley, for having the 'nads to set the temperature of the proceedings up front before the choir begins to sing.
I didn't recognize this film from the trailers that were paraded before me. This thing is far more intimate, brutal, and evil than one might have imagined based on the two minute clips given us. This well-honed script is filled with philosophical concepts and sensual overtones I don't recall seeing or hearing in ages (if ever). It was a true thinking man's story of greed and loss. If for no other reason, McCarthy's words demand that you hear them.
The assembled cast was superb with Bardem delightfully chewing up some scenery while Cruz and Fassbinder did their dead level best. There has been some titter about Diaz being so super but my jury is still out. She seemed under a lot of strain trying to project the ultimate in sensuality and evil simultaneously. The script's call for her character's antics took a lot of courage to tackle.
This was a superb ADULT film. The character development, narrative, and plot twists keep you interested but, alas, the party comes to an end on an unfulfilled note. It's as if Ridley noticed “we are out of time”.

This film would be great torture for a mother-in-law. (“I thought it was about a lawyer, honest!”)
Favorite line: “You know why I like Americans?” (No.) “They are dependable.”
Extra points: Did you spot Ridley's squeeze who actually had two sentences this film?
