and there is art.
You can enjoy entertainment by letting go, it's a passive experience. No expenditure of effort or brainpower is necessary or required. Repeated viewings will, perhaps, entertain, but offer no further insights, thoughts. The surface is all. 99.9% of what comes from Hollywood, including the "serious" Sundance films, are like this. The difference between "Hangover" and a Sundance film is the former have no false baggage, no claims to be anything but amusement.
On the other hand, there are art films. These may not be entertaining. At least, they may not offer immediate gratification; you may not understand them as you watch them, or indeed, for days or weeks afterwards. You may be offended by them, you may not like the characters, you may disagree with what you perceive as the directors' views.
Rather than just watch them, you must approach and study them from some basis of film knowledge, from some understanding of film history; perhaps, an understanding of other art forms also is necessary, i.e. literature, architecture, music, photography, philosophy.
For many of these films, repeated viewings not only are necessary, the viewer is compelled, propelled into his seat for the next viewing.
The transformation from a casual viewer to a film enthusiast isn't an easy journey: we have been raised w/the vast entertainment of TV and children's entertainment, conditioned to expect and feel comfortable with pablum.
But, in this, film appreciation shares kinship with all other forms of art. Effort is required; to appreciate the finest auteurs--- much like the greatest in any of the arts--- years of study are required.
From the amazing differences in response to entertainment and serious film at this forum, it is clear many have decided that there is something "wrong" or "snobbish" about films. While auteurs like Hitchcock, Kubrick, Stevens, Ford and many others are both accessible and artistic, they are but a small number of the geniuses in film, notable for their ability to entertain as well as intellectually intrigue.
What a waste for those who appreciate those masters if they ignore others, similarly great, who take a little effort and time.
