Colin Firth and Emily Blunt play two off-center characters that are trying to escape the misery of their lives. Firth had become estranged from his only son after his divorce and locked into a lifeless relationship with Anne Heche. He comes up with the idea of faking his death and making his way to the promise of a new job and life in Terre Haute. Before he gets a good start on the journey he meets up with a troubled Blunt who is doing the same only Blunt seems to suffer from more troubling behavior. In the end they find they need to return to their lives for the good of others.
Both Blunt and Firth give subtle characterizations of two people escaping with each other, loving each other, and letting each other go. Once again Firth proves himself the master of the refined portrayal while Blunt radiates her character's emotion with great aplomb. Well crafted, this is an interesting look into complicated lives.
