'Old Boy': Hooo Boy . . .

Well, it wasn't necessarily a scene by scene knock-off by Spike but it did follow the story closely. Fortunately for Brolin there was no octopus eating.

Brolin did about as well as could be expected and the violence wasn't quite as disturbing as the Korean original. He didn't seem to generate the sympathy or gross determination of his Korean counterpart. This story has an odd, unfamiliar feel when translated into Western culture so I think younger audiences won't quite get the same vibe from the plot as those who have seen the original. I noticed the theater wasn't exactly flush so I guess folks pay attention to Rotten Tomatoes and such.

Most folks my age have seen the original and will be going in for a comparison. I won't say the original blanks the remake but I give it points over Spike.
