The alleged true story of the last of the Khan Dynasty in 13th Century Russia while they were still a terrifying scourge. The film opens with European envoys coming to the Tartar Tsar's court to ask for peace. After they were dismissed the Dowager Queen suddenly lost her eyesight and her son reached out for someone to cure her. The reputation of St. Alexius caused them to call for him to perform a miracle otherwise Moscow would burn. Alexius obeys but fails to save her sight and is banished but watched from afar so he would live to see the burning of his city.
This film is supposed to give a very accurate historical view of the events shown and the gruesome way of life during those grand old days. Good cinematography and rapt attention to details of the time give this film more of a historical appeal rather than one as an "entertainment". At just over two hours it requires a commitment from the viewer. (NF stream)
