the Cold War comes the apocalyptic drama featuring the most unlikely romantic couple in film history: Ava Gardner and Gregory Peck.
Peck plays a sub commander who arrives in Australia, the only place where human life has survived a nuclear cloud---though scientists have determined the menace quickly is approaching. Stanley Kramer puts a group of people under the microscope to examine how they react to the knowledge of certain, imminent death.
Anthony Perkins, as a newly wed young officer surprisingly shows much depth (no pun intended); Fred Astaire, though his acting style is impossibly outdated, oddly seems okay in light of the characterization.
This film is worth a thousand Roland Emmeriches.
