a debacle, too.
Very good war scenes, though IMAX didn't contribute anything to them, surprisingly. The film, however, suffered from a Russia-sized helping of schmaltz: melodrama ladled out, unceasingly. Not one, mind you, but TWO love stories in the center of the worst ever battle.
But, the film has an amazing pedigree: director Bondarchuk's dad was himself the lead and director in that amazing 7-hour Russian, "War and Peace." The son's sister, also, was the lead in Tarkovsky's, "Solaris."
Pity the son doesn't appear to have his family's best talent; still, it is difficult to make a huge budget war epic with any success.
Give this one a miss unless you're desperate to see, hear, and feel lots of explosions.
