of course, we must add in gratuitous sex and violence. As a kid there were some reservations about me seeing "Cleopatra" because of Liz's costumes and passionate kisses.
We do have jaw breaking budgets which are mostly spent on animation and CGI and the public seems to like it. Because of the proliferation of media all tastes and needs can be met all the times without having to wait for "the movie of the year". (Ten Commandments, The Longest Day, et al). The beneficial side effect of too much media is independent film which has risen in stature over the past thirty years.
