It's a gripping drama w/the merits--- mainly the acting--- overcoming the sizable hurdle of the clichés. Daniel Bruhl indeed is a fine Lauda, a complex character who chose his career for the fortune, not love. His polar opposite, in temperament and motivation, portrayed by Hemsworth, also is a character not-so-easily-understood.
What drives men voluntarily to risk their lives when the odds are so horrific? And when terribly disfigured, what leads a man to continue? Certainly, Lauda's stated motivation no longer played a factor in his return?
Olivia Wilde, as Bruhl's wife, was stunning, conveying intelligence and feeling with her beauty.
The race scenes were dramatic, though not as excellent cinematographically as I might have hoped.
Bruhl indeed is a fine actor, having convincingly portrayed the charming Nazi sharp-shooting hero in "Inglorious Basterds."
