Jake Gyllenhaal plays Adam and Anthony in this exact look-alike, hide and seek drama of a meek history teacher spotting his "twin" in a rented movie. From that point on he becomes obsessed with finding everything about him and seeking him out in his most self-conscious ways. Melanie Laurent plays Adam's girlfriend (skin!) who persevere's through his solitary ways and competing with his overbearing mom (Rosselini). When Anthony (an actor) comes into the picture he is forceful and full of energy Adam doesn't have.
The story has a few twists but mostly is a showcase for Gyllenhaal's talent for playing two characters that are so different from each other. Later in the film he does a great job of playing both characters impersonating each other in front of their women. Adam meets Anthony's wife (Sarah Gadon-woof)and is discovered but accepted whereas just the opposite happens when Anthony beds Laurent.
This is very deliberately paced, somewhat mysterious film with lots of symbolism complete with hideous spiders on occasion. It's a mood piece with excellent acting that doesn't quite equal the some of its parts.
