This is a true "international" film with Hoffman, McAdams, Dafoe, Hoss, Bruhl, and other German and Arab actors lending screen presence to this mostly ensemble cast. Filmed in Hamburg with dreary grays (it is a spy film after all) the mood is set for a detailed, step by step look at an
operation that fishes for terrorists then tries to turn them into productive resources for the "good guys".
Hoffman's unit is very small and off the books due to German law. He has a network of informers which act as his early warning radar against terrorism. He, Hoss, and Bruhl work hard against the mainstream current of lawful German investigation agencies which routinely interfere for the sake of headlines and glory. Robin Wright plays the CIA presence who seems to be on Hoffman's side.
This is a superbly acted and edited film that tells the story in a forthright and detailed way of how Hoffman's group recruits and turns assets to their side of the street. The story has its turns but pivots completely in the end.
I would like to think there were more Hoffman films in the can somewhere but I fear not. This is truly a good film that intrigues you frame by frame.
I was surprised at near standing room only at the first matinee today. All the verandas withing 20 miles must have been abandoned. Folks here are thirsty for the good stuff.
Go say hey to Hoffman. You'll be glad you did.
