Battle Royale.
BR has a wicked sense of humour (it is a dark satire, after all) and doesn't take itself too seriously. Be warned, it is ultra-violent, but then so is the concept of children killing children for entertainment. This aspect of HG annoyed me - every time there was a killing the cameraman was struck down with a case of the DTs.
The characters in BR don't sit around being passive and one-dimensional like in HG. They actually have personalities and motivations. Basically, there is more 'stuff' in BR, and it doesn't take a whole hour of farting around with irrelevant storylines and campy acting to get to the action. And there is no shitty CGI in BR (hooray!). BR even has a proper ending. Rent it now.
