Great co-writing and direction from Joss Whedon (formerly the driving force behind the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and it's major film sequel to Firefy, Serenity)
Every actor was given room to develop their characters and the performances were all stellar. One of the best if not the best super-hero fims done to date. It's still very much a popcorn flick, but the dialogue is so crisp and the pacing so perfect that you don't care that it eschews loftier intentions. Minor caveats notwithstanding, The Avengers gets my highest recommendation. Four and one-haf stars ... **** 1/2
