I just learned that Danish director Gabriel Axel passed away last month at the ripe old age of 95. He is best remembered for Babette's Feast, his adaptation of Karen Blixen's short story.

As fortune would have it, I recently purchased the Criterion Collection Blu-Ray edition of Babette's Feast. I watched it last night in memory of Axel. This Blu-Ray is completely exquisite in every way. I've never seen the movie look so splendiferous and, dare I say, scrumptious.

Babette's Feast is one of my favourite literary adaptations. Others I love are:

The Dead by James Joyce - directed by John Huston
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro - directed by James Ivory
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens - directed by David Lean
Tess (of the d'Urbervilles) by Thomas Hardy - directed by Roman Polanski
Kes (A Kestrel for a Knave) by Barry Hines - directed by Ken Loach
Atonement by Ian McEwen - directed by Joe Wright
The Duellists by Joseph Conrad - directed by Ridley Scott
Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay - directed by Peter Weir

Any other recommendations for adaptations of serious literary works?
