Europa, it is just one of Jupiter's moons. But Europa stands apart from Jupiter's other moons in that there is ice on its surface. The ice is science fact gathered by astronomer's observations as well as from a probe sent by NASA to study Jupiter.
It has long been speculated that the ice on Europa covers subsurface lakes of water. And where there is water there is life.
The film tells its story after the fact through the narration of a mission commander back on Earth, and also through the video footage finally sent back to Earth from the landing module during its last live moments on Europa.
Viewing the film we are informed about the mission the same as those back on Earth at mission control would have been informed. Fragment by fragment. The plot appears to jump back and forth but on the whole has a beginning, middle and ending.
It is a horror movie but not in the usual sense. There is nothing supernatural at play here. Rather it is about the discovery of life elsewhere in our solar system. And this life takes the form of a......
Other notes:
Production values are good. I get the impression that the space craft structures seen during the numerous interior shots and also the EVA scenes are of very well made models. If there is CGI it must have been seamlessly integrated with the set design. If budget is low on this one, what budget there was was put to effective use.
At some point we see the areas of the craft where there is artificial gravity and those areas of it where there is zero-G by observing the crew move through them. And the Zero-G seems well done. I'm still trying to imagine how it was done. And haven't we all seen video footage from the International Space Station as well as hundreds of Space Shuttle missions to get a sense of what it looks like.
I found a used blu-ray of this movie from Amazon. Now I park the movie on the rack right after 2001 and 2010. Both of those movies made comments about Europa, particularly 2010.
A good solid sci-fi movie that speculates about what form life may take on Europa.
