"Donnie Darko" one of the best this year...

Just saw the film, although it has been out for 3 months in a very limited release. The film is absolutley brilliant! The best description I can think of is "American Beauty" but darker and more surreal. Better yet, cross AB with "Mulholland Drive", "Pi", and "Memento" and that is a close approximation of what's going on. Although, the storyline is more coherent than any of the others, excluding "American Beauty".

It is a deeply affecting movie on a strange, emotional, level, much in the same way "AB" grabs ahold of you. The movie center's on a weird, mentally, troubled teenager instead of "Beauty's" middle-aged family man. Yet, his family and community around him are slice of perfect Americana gone wrong, with little pieces of ugliness bubbling up at random times.

If this movie got a wider release, I am sure it would be getting award nominations left and right. It is far better than "Mullholland Drive" in almost every aspect(which is a good film), which was just named best picture of 2001 by the National Society of Film Critics on Saturday.

Has anyone around here seen it?
