family, friends, home, or any human interaction is it. Slowly--- and very painfully--- we see the disintegration of the human psyche as Lester Ballard descends from peculiar to bizarre and downwards to perversion and depravity. Not an easy film to watch, at all, yet it raises questions about humanity that few films do. James Franco directed (no acting participation, however) and he shows a sparse style that is very effective.
