'Seventh Son' vs. 'Jupiter Ascending' : One stinks on ice . . .

the other just stinks. That's the best way to sum up these CGI fests for children and immature adults.

As far as story and script it seems far easier to focus on the Dark Ages vs. the future somewhere else in the universe. Instead of exploding worlds and cities we have exploding towers, heads, and gates. Instead of extraordinary, sullen, mumbling villains we have witches and demi-wizards. The difference of scale makes it easier to concentrate the craft of effects leaving the audience to concentrate on the characters rather than anything but the characters. Yeah, I figure 'Son' merely stinks.

'Son' is your basic Dark Ages fantasy fest with Jeff Bridges playing the surviving "grand master" of the knights who protect the people. Bridges gets word that he is needed and that Julianne Moore (Arch Witch) is a coming to kick some butt and somebody needs to stop her. The assembled actors comprise stock characters you have seen in fantasy after fantasy over you life time. There are no new plots or fantasy characters so you just hold on hoping a spark of creativity is ignited somewhere on screen. (Pretty much doesn't spark, this one.)

Kids will find 'Son' somewhat easy to follow over 'Jupiter' and the creatures/monsters more entertaining. I'm not really sure which audience 'Son' is aimed at but it sure is more entertaining than 'Jupiter'.

The biggest distraction in 'Son' for me was Bridges. I am not in the Bridges Cult and do not care for his incessant drunk-cowboy-with-a-mouth-full-of-whiskey-corks accent he seems to be using every film outing. irritating for me, amusing for most, I guess. It was nice seeing Alicia Vikander as a warm up for 'Ex Machina'. She has a special kind of looks that would make the best vanilla ever.

Unless you have young'uns or are bored to tears there is no real reason to motivate down to the multiplex.
