Taped this off HBO and just got done watching it...I am going to TRY and keep my personal political views of Edward Snowden out of this blurb...
First you can "feel" Steven Soderbergh, (producer), presence on the shooting, look, sound and music...Syriana big time...including CIA double agents...
From the beginning to the very end shots, Snowden aged 10 years in 3 years...he has black rings under eyes that just show what he personally is going through...he gave me the sense he was amoral through it all. This was well thought out, planned methodically and exacted on his timeline...Snowden is well aware of what he is doing, he did feel it was the right thing to do, did not care about repercussions as much as getting this out there...well spoken, intelligent and removed from any real signs of emotions...Watching him react in real time as the news was breaking was interesting...When he is on different laptops through the movie...it felt to me, he had a weapon in his hands...
Glen Greenwald is tenacious as bloodhound, not very likeable and really doesn't care. The Guardian plays less of role as the movie progresses...he stays constant to follow this to the end...
William Binney, former NSA analyst until 2001...he drops bombs like a B-52 every time he is on camera, really blow your hair back kind of stuff...to the point of "how is this guy still alive?"
What did I learn...well, this pissed off the rest of WORLD more than it did us as citizens...I knew it was taking place, not to this extent, but as an US Citizen, I accepted it...there are chips in EVERYTHING that they can access...every hotel room phone is a listening device, even when hung up...(the end of the movie they are passing hand written notes)...
It is definitely worth a viewing, IMHO...I am still mulling over what I just watched...not good or bad, just sorting it all out...I paused it quite a bit to read all the text during the movie...went back and viewed some scenes several times...this goes far beyond right or left, since both are accountable for the Patriot Act. (yes, the GOP had this ready to go, just a little too quickly after 911 for my personal liking) This spans the Bush and Obama administrations, nobody is lilywhite on this issue...
I am looking forward to hearing what others think of this movie...
Thanks
Mark
