More dismal pre/post Apocalypse crap from the boys from Johannesburg. This time crime is out of control and automated robots help police up the streets and slums. Unit #22 is damaged in a fire fight and is slated for salvage until Dev Patel (who has far outlived his stardom) saves him and programs him with his AI software that gives him all the human attributes both police and criminals lack.Chappie is hijacked with Patel by a small gang with big plans. (Two of the gang members are high-profile SA pop, rap stars using their real names.) They teach Chappie to become a criminal and he begins to assist them in crimes despite Patel's best efforts to intervene.
Right before midpoint I was ready to hit the bricks but after midpoint things began to pick up and much action ensued. Not enough to save the film, mind you.
Sigourney and Jackman cameo'd in and out of the story which had a few laughs and excellent CGI.
Stream or rent if you must. The dreariness of SA drags me down.
