Ozon gives us the story of a bored French teacher and his promising student who is encouraged to insinuate himself into a middle-class French family in order to continue writing essays describing the family's life. Francois Luchini is the bored French teacher who becomes fired up by the promising writings of Claude who has plans of his own.
Luchini shares Claude's essays with his wife (Scott Thomas) who is at first amused then later indignant that Luchini is pushing him further into the private lives of Rapha and his parents. Little known to Luchini is the secret plans and desires Claude has outside his essays that include Luchini's family as well.
The film is broader than just the essays as it covers Scott Thomas' art gallery and her attempts to make it a success despite the ludicrous "art" she shows. There are a lot of smiles and chuckles and I found this film compelling on some small scale. Claude, played by Ernst Umhauer, conveys the sly mischief and devilry of a small Machiavelli who is seizing every moment to make it his own.
I see it as 3 outta 5. But only if you like French film.
