'The Woman In Gold': Bringing Home Auntie . . .

Helen Mirren created an entertaining "little old Austrian lady" by doing "The Queen" on amphetamines who hypers her way through every scene in the hunt for the return of her families art stolen by Nazi authorities and later turned over to the national museum. Ryan Reynolds got in character with stoop shoulders and an "awe shucks" attitude. (I actually like Reynolds despite the fact that his "damn, I'm cute" persona is always leaking through.)

I found this film interesting for its vivid flashbacks of Mirren's upper class Jewish family, the onslaught of Nazism, and escaping to America leaving everything behind. The flashbacks were filled with the color and elegance of a time largely gone by.

The film tries its best to make the story engrossing but somehow never achieves that goal. The compressed time line makes for a good screenplay but not so much for the accuracy of the ten year long ordeal.

Despite most reviews this is a good dinner-date entertainment for the S.O. as this is really a "woman's" movie.
