It's 1971 and freshly trained new recruits are ordered to Belfast. Not knowing what to expect Hook saddles up and arrives in Belfast with his company. On their very first patrol their unit commander decides to leave their helmets and shields behind. A bit of hearts-and-minds have you. They go to an appointed place and all hell breaks loose with eggs, then rocks, then fists. Hook dashes across the line to assist a fallen squad member when he takes a beaning and barely escapes from pursuers. Now he waits for night when he can move about but soon finds himself in trouble and knows not whom to trust.
There is a lot of tension, action, and drama in this one. Hook takes some bounces and ends up inside a home where a father and daughter tend to his wounds. He becomes suspicious and bolts...bolts right into trouble.
Hook is played by Jack O'Connell ('Unbroken') and this role seems to be a reprise of 'Unbroken'. He takes a lot of beatings but manages to come back. After his horrendous experience that one night in Belfast he leaves the service to rejoin his son and begin anew.
This is great drama served with excellent performances and cinematic grit. Belfast '71 was THE place not to be.
