'99 Homes': Capitalist scum vs. Humanity

Very educational, too educational. We see how a young construction worker (Garfield) gets evicted by a contract real estate agent (Shannon) which leads to a life-crushing compromise made by the "little guy".

This film shows us the evils of a legal system that 99% of the population does not know nor understand that can ruin lives overnight for the express benefit of predatory individuals trained in the art of defrauding both the government and the banks.

Shannon should be a nominee for his performance as Rick Carver the skilled killer of foreclosure properties. Intense, unforgiving with little signs of conscience or heart. He carries the film being just evil enough to amass deals and cash without wearing tell-tale horns on his head. Garfield plays the honest guy who, out of necessity finds quick cash from Shannon that leads to the quicksand of greed.

Unlike Shannon's role, Garfield's role softened up unrealistically near the end. It almost sunk the film from my standpoint. Alas, this IS a must see. Very dramatic, very informative, very clever. In fact, as they foreclosed home after home they cast "real people" who look like real neighbors to be the victims of the legal juggernaut.

Near midpoint Shannon gives one of those epic, message laden speeches about the way things are which is an outright indictment of our way of life. Funny, that this film and message is funded and directed by the good folks of Abu Dhabi. Is it taking foreigners to tell us our inconvenient truths these days whether or not there is an ulterior motive?

It is well worth a see.
