"Amour" by Michael Haneke, delivers all it all in droves. In fact - so much, one can't help but wonder: why make such a movie?
The answer lies in the director's dark vision, and like everyone else, he is entitled to his. In that regard he rivals Pasolini... which is just another way of saying he is not everyone's cup of blood.
Haneke is a master, there is no single bit of doubt about that. He is also uncommonly brutal and honest - and honesty often is just another form of brutality. His mastery of images and subject makes his dark vision so much darker... so dark, in fact, that one might start looking for that Exit sign in desperation.
Can death be beautiful? Well, if Haneke had his day, it would be. Set up in a gorgeous Parisian apartment, surrounded by your typical upper-intelligentsia artifacts, it is almost perfectly detached from reality... until it enters like a proverbial freight train.
Is it worth renting? Well, that totally depends on your age and disposition. Someone of an advanced age, somewhat prone to even mild depression, might as well just soap his rope and get the stool ready. For the film is relentless in its pursuit of suffering.
And a young and healthy ones? The dumb ones with their iPhone thumbs? I don't think this is a film for them at all. In fact, I doubt anyone under 50 will get it. Having gone though thighs replacement and a couple of bypasses would certainly help.
I think this is movie that Patrick would love. Which is to say - very few others would! :)
