Jessica Jones

A Netflix Marvel series not unlike DareDavil. This one is not really a superhero story but almost more of a horror story with a psychological study. The feel is detective noir like Raymond Chandlerish with a snarky, hard drinking protagonist trying to escape her past but with a gender flip.

The show is shepherded by a woman, Melissa Rosenberg, which gives the show a very different feel. Jessica Jones is played by Krysten Ritter late of Veronica Mars, Breaking Bad and Don't Trust the B--- in Apt 23 who is perfect for this role. Playing a hard drinking cynical woman who has all but given up due to her history especially some time ago when she was in the grips of a villain, Kilgrave.

Kilgrave is played by David Tenant and he is perfect. This is one of the best portraits of a villain in one of these shows ever. He has a superpower of being able to control anyone he comes in contact which forces them to gladly obey any whim no matter how evil or self-destructive. This guy has an incredible power and yet he is purely selfish and mundane, using the power only for his own comfort and not caring about the consequences to anyone else. Terrifying because he is only all too real.

Jessica Jones has super strength but not the sort that makes her a superhero. She has a B or C level power but is completely undone by Kilgrave's A level power. She believes him dead but suffers PTSD as a victim of months of degradation, rape and misuse by this man who used her as his toy.

Kilgrave can use anyone as a spy or murderer so Jessica, as she realizes he is not dead is frightened out of her wits and can't trust anyone. The series moves as others in her universe try to draw her out of her self-loathing for what she did while under his control. Even though she knows she couldn't stop herself, she feels guilt as do others who were similarly used. But everyone else won't believe that this is possible.

A really different hero story as Jessica Jones has to fight against people who are controlled and she doesn't hit them as much as pushes them out of the way. She cares about their lives and health and they are all defenses for Kilgrave who can use anyone against her or as a distraction.

The story ramps up as the episodes fly by. This show doesn't pass over the wreckage of this use on people unlike superhero movies that don't bother with the impact of destruction on normal people.

I highly recommend it.
