This is a sailor's film. If you like rolling, rigging, splashing, and spray, then you will like this--at least the first half. This film has the typical Opie look: Well scrubbed and fresh off the line. His signature color and camera work seems to traverse all his films and here it plays an important part of illuminating the story which helps to put the viewer right there.
Hemsworth is assigned to a ship with a new captain (Walker) with the promise of finally getting his own ship if he returns with 2000 barrels of whale oil. They start off with typical friction which later fades as the story strips away the importance of titles vs. nature.
Teeny Tiny Spoiler: When the very first pod is spotted Hemsworth harpoons the first whale. Suddenly, a feeling of sadness came over me. They pursued the whale until it exhausted and finally floated up. Both Hemsworth and a crewman had the unmistakable look of saddness in their eyes as if regretting the death of another magnificent animal. Bravo, Ron Howard, you had you say early on and got us all to respond.
It didn't take long for the mega whale to show up and destroy everything. The rest of the film was their attempts to survive and get home as they were about as far from Nantucket as could be imagined--2000 miles west of Chile. But get home they finally did.
The story is actually a flashback as Melville (Whishaw) interviews Nickerson (Gleeson) for the story he's always refused to give. He refuses at first but finally speaks the unspeakable and reveals their voyage and survival.
Kudos to the actors, Howard, and all concerned for such a compelling and entertaining film. Howard isn't strong on critical movies but seems to straddle the line between entertainment and awards. Hemsworth may not be a heavyweight but the entire production supports him and the story superbly.
Opie seems to make "must see' films and this one is no different. Enjoy.
