another near perfect period piece recreation. It's 1951 and Mara is working in a NYC department store when Blanchette makes her acquaintance over a model train. Slowly Blanchette moves on Mara who is somewhat entranced by the older more worldly person. If not for the spurned and angry ex-husband (Chandler) things would have happened sooner. In order for her husband to cool down about her latest female attachment (and custody battle) the girls take a road trip from NYC to Chicago. During that time something finally happens between the two and Mara "hawks her wares". A very "tasteful" scene. (No pun.)
They are discovered and Blanchette disappears for the good of her relationship with Mara and her custody case. But, alas, the unrequited love will come full circle.
I suppose this is an actor's movie. The leads have noms but I don't see it. The film was compelling in a molasses kind of way and the actors spent practically all their time dealing with unspoken attraction and a few emotional outbursts. Blanchette and Mara have both done better elsewhere. I feel the Academy may be celebrating new found freedoms with the Oscar bids here.
The film was well done, the art direction and cinematography excellent. The subject matter borders on the mundane and setting it in 1951 merely differentiates it from other such films. It strikes me as an odd project.
