A couple of years back someone here could not contain his excitement over that marvel... so I put it into my Netflix "Send when available" pile and forgot. But yesterday it showed up.First - my wife, seeing strange title, did some reading on it, and declared me finally fully senile. She rarely does that, but still that small fact did not stop me from pressing the Play button, giving me the much needed reprieve from the endless news drone.
Fairly soon she confirmed her diagnosis, stating it was now official, turned off the sound and concentrated on her iPad... I continued watching, using my wireless headphones.
Did I see anything in that movie that I didn't know and experience while growing up in Russia? Hardly.
The degenerate sub-humans shown in the film were as common as half-rotten potatoes sold for 10 cents a kilo at your friendly "supermarket".
OK, OK, so there IS a slight exaggeration in some characters, but that is hardly significant. Anyone who ever visited the many small Russian industrial towns would immediately recognize the scenery and people - always drunk, illiterate and primitive, with the mental abilities of an average single-cell organism. From a heavy drunken stupor to a not too fulfilling orgasm spread their little worlds.
These people and their miserable lives are represented in full realism, and if someone finds it frightening, just imagine them armed with the modern nukes and tanks, busy selling their gas to the decadent and equally degenerate Europe - if that was the film's only message, then it would be sufficient to elevate it to the worthy viewing status.
So no... this is not a satire. The movie is horrific in its truth, and if you think it all ended in 1984, then you have been smoking very good grass.
Watch it for one single message: these are the people we are dealing with. Imagine what they did with that misspelled Reset button.
