Deep Impact, a 1998 film now impacting your cable channels.

Spoiler: There's a tidal wave in this one; I advise to keep surfing the channels to watch something else. Absolutely horrible.

Which is not to say uninteresting. This came out the same summer as an identically-themed movie called Armageddon, starring Bruce Willis. Why do they do that? Deep Impact should have been the better movie because it had Morgan Freeman as the President. Both films are about blowing up a rogue comet (Neither film could vary and choose an asteroid?) heading to wipe out the earth.

Freeman's portrayal as President makes me want to write him onto the ballot in November. He was that good. Unfortunately, Deep Impact was produced by Spielberg, and also starred Tea Leoni, Robert Duvall, Elijah Woods (the Hobbit dude). It went on and on with endless smarm, sappy tear-jerking, hyper-emotionalism, and not nearly enough about the freaking comet expedition. It just wouldn't stop with the Spielberg boo-hoo.

Armageddon made more money, with its equally ridiculous story about oilfield drillers piloting a rocket to the comet to drill down for bomb placement (identical MO's here). A bit of the yee-haw buckaroo thing with that one, but there was more comet involvement; less woe-is-us footage.

The films differ in that Deep Impact has us receiving part of the fragmented comet, whereas the Armageddon cowboys prevail. And get this comparison -- one film titled Armageddon; in the other, the mission spacecraft is called the Messiah.
