small movies set in NYC. Why is that? Why is Woody Allen stamped on most any small film set there? Everyone is constantly exploring himself out loud or explaining himself to everyone within earshot. There is no such thing as NORMAL in these small films. These films labeled as comedies may only be a comedy to a true New Yorker while outsiders are puzzled as to what is actually going on. Being an outsider I chuckled maybe three times and that's actually good for this kind of film not having Woody involved.
Gerwig is your "typical" New York woman ready for a child but not ready for a relationship, ever. She arranges to get a sperm donation from a Manhattan pickle maker who turns out designer dills. Gerwig has also recently met the self-involved Hawke who teaches at the downtown college works at. Hawke is also married to the even more self-involved Moore who is an icy Scandanavian who teaches at Columbia and is more academically accomplished than her husband.
A chance meeting leads to an affair that gives Hawke a change of heart and a divorce from Moore. A child arrives, shared custody of the other two kids ensues, and a growing distance begins to creep in according to Gerwig's emotional radar. After all, Gerwig wanted a child on her own and Hawke gave her that. Now, she thinks Hawke should go back to Moore and resume a more meaningful marriage which Moore really wants. Much hilarity ensues.
Bill Hader actually provides some comedy relief along with Maya Rudolph--the rest is up to you.
