Dark, some grit, violence in measures, this is based on the true story of an undercover operation in the mid-80's to bring down Pablo Escobar's dealers, middlemen, and bankers.Bryan Cranston plays an undercover U.S. Customs agent who bluffs and sells himself to the Columbian drug lords as a master money launderer. John Leguizamo skillfully plays Cranston's flaky partner, and Diane Kruger spreads both pulchritude and savvy around as his fake fiance. Amy Ryan ('Birdman', ex-wife) plays the agent-in-charge with a determined, clipped style of a world weary crime fighter. Benjamin Bratt and Elena Anya ("Room In Rome") play the local "power couple" whom Cranston and Kruger actually become attached to but betray.
Set in the mid-80's this film carries all the hallmarks of the time with the clothes, hair, and music. There is unexpected action and sentiments expressed by the druggies that make you think Cranston will be dead by the next scene. It also conveys the enormous marital strain an undercover agent has.
Compelling, dark, and exciting, this is a good one to go see.
