DeNiro works off his guilty pleasure from earlier this year. He gives the solid, understated performance by playing Roberto Duran's trainer who was hired to make him a world champion. Ramirez played the ever volatile Duran whose emotions could never be trusted. Ana de Armas (smokin' hot Cuban Scarlett) played his wife who tried to soothe and guide her husband which lead to life long frustration.
The movie goes back to Panama when Duran was a child. We see the resentment and hostility of Duran and his countrymen towards the USA's persistence in holding onto the canal. He meets his first trainer, Plomo, then his wife in a country that is tightly controlled by its own police. Plomo takes him as far as his connections can when Reuben Blades steps in and introduces him to Arcel. The rest is Duran fighting his demons and Sugar Ray.
This is a rather conventional bio-pic but it works because of the subject matter and the excellent cast employed. The boxing matches do build up a sense of tension and Duran's extreme behavior can put one on edge. If you are a "fight fan" then this is worth a trip to the theater.
