Morgan is an L-9 biological entity created by a team of scientists working deep in the woods somewhere. She is the third attempt to bring to life an entity using artificial special-purposed DNA. The staff had become attached to her as if she was their child until one day she snapped and attacked Jennifer Jason Leigh. That required a call to "corporate" which sent Kate Mara to investigate Morgan's soundness and viability for further use. Poor Morgan had been shut away in "her room" until Giamatti arrived to do a full psych assessment. At this point the moody, noir-ish film became a near action movie.
'Morgan' certainly has the talent with an A- cast and Ridley Scott producing but it did not have the insight or sensitivity of 'Ex Machina'. There are too many characters to be developed and things are done in broad sweeps. Anya Taylor-Joy (Morgan) did a well-focused job as a maturing "person" who had insights and precognitions without the full understanding of who she really is.
Great locales, creepy sets, muted tones, and mildly eccentric characters make for an interesting story but not a compelling one. Morgan is not AI in the classical sense as she is growing tissue and not a machine.
If you are a sci-fi freak you probably are planning to see it. If you aren't it's a coin toss. I was okay with it, myself.
