'III: The Ritual' : A healthy does of Russian surrealism . . .

We open is a small, dark "European" town where a strange illness has fallen upon half its inhabitants. Two sisters, Aiya and Mirra, have tended her mother until she dies. Then Mirra becomes bedridden and worsens by the day. Aiya desperately reaches out to the local priest for help. Father Herman accepts them into his quarters where Aiya finds a book unlike the rest of his religious writings. It is a ritual that will allow a person to enter the mind of sick to find out what the real problem is.

Now, we journey through imagery and atmospheres that aren't necessarily horrific as unsettling. Very atmospheric.

The main characters are played by two very pretty Russian girls who do an outstanding job. The art direction is near Medival and the cinematography and post-production create a very surreal backdrop. Filmed in both Russia (Novgorod) and Germany (Hessen) the film overwhelms with darkness and antiquity.

Not your average popcorn flick. No screaming teens nor chainsaws. If you have just taken a hand full of reds best not to watch this.
