This is the grim, often hard to watch, story of a preacher (Guy Pearce) who led his congregation to the Olde West to begin anew. He was married to Anna (Van Houten) who had Liz (Fanning as older/Emilia Jones as younger) their daughter. The film shows Pearce as a man twisted up with evil who tortures his wife and seeks revenge on his daughter ever since she ran away. The story is told with a non-linear timeline but not a severe as Pearce's 'Memento'. To me, the standout performance was from the young Emilia Jones who played the persecuted Liz as a child and run away. The rest of the cast was good but Emilia seemed to be special to watch.
Because it is 2:28:00 and very dark and brutal I can't really recommend this one. You are on your own.
