he gives us a Winnie that is more invigorated, compelling, and real than ever before. It's in his eyes. Only the Deep State can keep him from the best actor for this year.
This film shows us a rather short period of time beginning with him becoming Prime Minister and ending just after Dunkirk's evacuation. It shows his tenacity and doubt as he battles political forces who want to negotiate with Germany.
This is Churchill's "greatest hits" combined with high politics and personal struggle to do the right thing. Oldman didn't necessarily do a straight-up imitation but created a believable persona dealing with problems of state and the small details of life.
Everyone was excellent. Lily James (his secretary), Kristin Scott Thomas (his wife), Ben Mendelsohn (the King), Stephen Dillane (Halifax), and Samuel West (Sir Anthony Eden) all played very fine parts. Kudo's to the writers for making this particular period of history understandable.
When the film was finally over I was saddened. I could have watched at least two more hours. At least give me "the Blitz" then fade out.
Inspirational, because anyone over sixty wants to stand and clap. (I don't think the audience had anyone under sixty there!}
PS. The cinematography was subdued but elegant. Very impressive.
Time to get off the sofa and go.
