if you enjoy westerns

Funny you should mention western movies, just came from a double feature of westerns, plus a short to kick it off. The 20 minute film was" rodeo" perhaps the best of the lot

But I'm no expert, the others were pretty good too. THe whole night was rodeo themed, starting with JR Bonner, a pekenpaw movie with steve mcqueen . I had a secondary enjoyment in seeing the old days of rodeo in both films, when they only used brahma bulls, although the short "rodeo" was modern style.

In discussion between the films, the production assistant on bonner , who mostly answered questions about Sam peckenpaw, mentioned mcqueen, who said it was his most important work, since it was about father and son, and mcqueen was looking for his father almost his entire life, only to find he had died by the time he found him.

The production assistant, at the time a very cultured young english women,(she said she was six at the time) first trip to America was to a rodeo in rural Arizona in 1971, said it was quite a culture shock . Never heard of a rodeo, or Arizona for that matter. A film editor was also there, with a few stories, he was cutting straw dogs in a motel room while they shot Jr bonner. Said peckinpaw looked at the first cut , after about five minutes, said I can't stand this anymore, cut it in half, but don't loose anything. So at the viewing for the second cut where they dutifully had half the previous stack of film cans, they got the same thing.

After about five minutes, I can't stand it anymore, cut it in half, but don't loose anything. The bonner film was good looking , I liked it a lot. I've been to a few rodeos, but not often. In the city, city boy here, the stock looks all beat down and poor. I won't pay people for that.

The second movie was perhaps stronger, and had perhaps my favorite actor, Robert Mitchum. I had never seen him so young, and never noticed his looks before. No wonder he was a star, it was kind of like when a one sees a female actress and you say she has movie star looks. As good as some modern film actors are, they are not going to be running around punching out rodeo guys realistically. Had a strange title, The Lusty men. maybe because susan hayward was the love interest. there was a lot more testosterone than lust.

OH, and MCqueen was too vain to let anyone see him ride the mechanical bull, where he had to wave his hat and pretend, even though it was an insurance restriction, and he did a lot of the other rodeo stuff. THe production assistant said she and ally mcgraw just followed Ben Johnson around, he was cowboy, I guess, because she described him as perfectly polite, they couldn't get enough of him. FRom this film Mcqueen , the producer of "the getaway", hired Peckenpaw to direct it. THe next for peckenpaw was in england, only Mcgraw would go, Mcqueen declined. Lead to the divorce.

Some director introduced the movie, and suggested getting the criterion DVD of Black beauty, as it contained a bunch of genius level shorts from the same guy who did Rodeo. Or maybe it was the black stallion , I was eating popcorn.

Buy the way, I never saw "forsaken" Now, DVD Blue ray, meh, I feel spoiled, Jr bonner was shot in todd e-o, todds version of cinemascope. The lusty men was black and white out of the fifties, but still had the screen size to get the picture, an impact of the action in the scenes.
