I spent two summers in the Zakarpatie region, which used to be their territory, and everyone spoke Hungarian (magyar), rich in fruit and wine. I developed if not love, then at least some appreciation of their culture, the sound of their language - a unique one... loosely related to Finnish and Japanese plus some other more obscure ones.
There were some Hungarian movies shown in the USSR, mostly dealing with political struggle and war, and I remembered some names and faces.
I am not too familiar with the current situation in Hungary, but they were the first (OK, maybe the second, after Yugoslavia...) to show Moscow their finger, and one of the first after WWII to have communist bloodshed in their streets.
One thing for sure - the list of great Hungarian directors has just grown from one to two.
